Bone Grafting

Treatment for Bone Loss

Bone loss in the face and jaw can occur due to various reasons, such as congenital defects or facial trauma. If you are experiencing bone loss in your jaw or face, bone grafting can be a highly effective treatment option to repair and restore these areas. Bone grafting is also a common procedure before the placement of dental implants.

At Raleigh Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, our team of expert oral surgeons, Dr. Hoverstad, Dr. Camp, Dr. Milewski, and Dr. Marrazzo, are here to help you restore your smile and oral health. We encourage you to contact our office in Raleigh, NC, or Clayton, NC, today to schedule a consultation today.

Understanding How a Bone Graft Works

A bone graft is a surgical procedure that involves the placement of grafting material into an area where additional bone is desired. This grafting material can be obtained from various sources, such as donated human tissue (allografts), animal tissue (xenografts), the patient's own body (autografts), or synthetic materials (alloplastic grafts). Once the graft is placed, new bone cells will grow and eventually replace the grafting material, resulting in healthier and stronger bone.

Bone grafting is commonly performed to create a solid foundation for dental implants. Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are surgically placed into the jaw bone to support replacement teeth. However, if there is insufficient bone present in the jaw, the success of dental implant placement can be compromised. By undergoing a bone graft, patients can enhance the stability and longevity of their dental implants, restoring both oral and maxillofacial structure and functionality.

Types of Anesthesia

We offer several forms of anesthesia to ensure your comfort.

Types of Bone Grafting Treatments

During your consultation, our oral surgeons will thoroughly assess your oral health using advanced 3D scans of your mouth and face. These scans help your oral surgeon to evaluate your facial structures, detect any hidden oral health concerns, and develop a custom care plan tailored to your specific needs. Many dental implant patients also need a bone graft to provide more support for the future implant. If you need a bone graft, your oral surgeon will review the type of bone grafting treatment you will receive and let you know what you can expect.

Ridge Augmentation

This procedure rebuilds the alveolar ridge, the bony ridge that supports the teeth, and prepares it for implant placement. By replenishing the bone lost due to tooth loss, ridge augmentation ensures a more stable foundation for future dental implants.

Sinus Lift

A sinus lift is performed when there is insufficient bone height in the upper jaw for dental implant placement. During this procedure, the sinus wall is gently lifted, and a bone graft is inserted to create a strong foundation for the dental implants.

Socket Preservation

Following tooth extraction, socket preservation is performed to prevent bone loss and maintain the socket's size and shape. This procedure is crucial for future implant placement, as it preserves the surrounding bone structure.

Major Bone Grafting

Major bone grafting is typically required for treating large skeletal defects caused by trauma, congenital defects, tumor surgery, or diseases. In these cases, the patient's own bone can be harvested from donor sites such as the skull, knee, or hip. Major bone grafting procedures are performed in a hospital setting by our experienced oral surgeons.
