History of Our Practice

In 1957 Dr. F. Durant Bell established what was to be the beginning of this practice in the Professional Building on Martin Street in downtown Raleigh. Dr. Benny Martin joined him in practice in 1964. Drs. Bell and Martin subsequently moved to Wade Avenue beside the old Rex Hospital, and later to a larger space on Glenwood Avenue at Oberlin Road. Dr. R. Donald Coffey, Jr. then joined Drs. Bell and Martin in 1969, followed by Dr. Ron Moss in 1977.

In 1979 the practice moved to 3900 Wake Forest Road, near the site of the then newly-relocated Raleigh Community Hospital, to provide easier access for patients in the rapidly growing Raleigh area and surrounding communities.

Dr. John Pearson then joined the practice in 1981, Dr. Jay Jefferson in 1987, Dr. Brian Camp in 1997, and Dr. Steven Davis in 2000.

Dr. Bell retired from the practice in 1989 after working for several years in a part-time capacity. Dr. Coffey retired in 1998, followed by Dr. Martin at the end of 2000. Dr. Moss separated from the group at the end of 2003 to pursue solo practice in Henderson, North Carolina. Most recently, Dr. Davis separated from the practice at the end of 2004 and is currently in solo practice.

In addition to an office location in Raleigh, several satellite offices have been an integral part of this practice since early in its history. The first was in Wilson, North Carolina and was served initially by Drs. Bell and Martin and later by Dr. Pearson. An office in Cary was established first on Walnut Street and then moved several years later to the present location on Executive Circle off of Kildaire Farm Road. Drs. Jefferson and Camp now rotate to the Cary office every other day to provide full-time coverage with the same office hours as the Raleigh location. Dr. Moss established a satellite office in his native Henderson, North Carolina, and he took over that office as a solo practitioner when he left the practice in 2003. Dr. Pearson has utilized a portion of Dr. Jimmy Oldham’s general dental office in Smithfield as a satellite office for several years. He presently works in the Raleigh and Smithfield offices on an alternating-day basis each week. Finally, an office was opened in the Wakefield area of North Raleigh in 2003. Operation of that office was subsequently taken over by Dr. Davis upon his departure from the group. Most recently, the Raleigh office location was moved from Wake Forest Road to Bandford Way, near the intersection of Creedmoor and Strickland Roads, in May 2005.

Drs. Pearson, Jefferson and Camp continue to practice oral and maxillofacial surgery in Raleigh, Cary and Smithfield and are committed to serving these areas with the best possible care. Maps to each office location can be found within the “office maps” heading on this site.
